Meet the Founder - Darryl Colbert

Darryl is a public servant, employed by the District of Columbia Government, for over 19 years; where he has received many awards and letters for his dedicated service. He has worked with many community groups and merchants associations to organize cleanups in several of the neighborhoods and business communities of the District of Columbia.

Darryl was featured in the H Street CDC Newsletter, Community Spotlight, when he spoke on how a team effort can clean up a community and reduce the crime rate. As an Inspector in the Ward Six community, he has built a reputation as a “problem solver”, worked with members of the Management Reform Teams to re-engineer his agency. During the re-engineering process, Darryl saw that the basic ticket form was causing excessive dismissals, so he took the initiative to redesign the ticket to reduce the opportunities for inspector mistakes thereby increasing the clarity of the ticket for the citizens, and ultimately the enforceability of the ticket.

In 1999, Darryl was recommended for The Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Award as a Distinguished District of Columbia Government Employee. That same year, he was also selected by the Mayor’s Office to represent his agency on a Multi- Governmental Nuisance Task Force. This team was put together by the Mayor to address chronic nuisances in the city. As an Investigator, he continues to work with many other City and Federal Agencies addressing issues effecting the environment.

Giving back to the community also is a central focus of Darryl's life. He has volunteered at treatment centers and jails in the metropolitan area, speaking to young people on the dangers of drugs and the obstacles faced by youth who drop out of school.

In 2003, Darryl saw a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students at Ruth K. Webb Elementary School. After a one-on-one experience with a teacher at the school, Darryl created the Lillian S. Jones Youth Foundation. The Foundation is a personal triumph for Darryl. A grandson of the late Lillian S. Jones, Darryl watched his maternal grandmother dedicate her life to sowing seeds of love in the lives of youth and those in need in the Washington area. Through the Foundation's projects, Darryl hopes to carry on his grandmother's legacy for the next generation.

Darryl lives in Maryland with his lovely wife Debbie and their two children.
